Congratulations to team KEKOA for taking out the Mike Carney Toyota Townsville Billfish Challenge 2011 with five billfish tags (from a total of 10 fish caught by the entire fleet).
It was great to see Mike, who has supported the Townsville Tournament as sponsor for close to 20 years now, come out on top for his first win. The boys took out Champion Team, Champion Angler (Mike), Runner-up Champion Angler (Chris), Champion Skipper (Luke), Champion Crew (Braden) as well as a two first sailfsh daily awards and a first marlin daily.
KEKOA lead from start to finish marking both the first and the last fish of the comp – Mike got us on the board with a 30kg sailfish on Day 2 (Day 1 a virtual write-off due to the weather) followed soon after by Nigel with a 15kg black marlin (his first marlin!) Day 3 it was Chris’ turn and he lead us off for scoring for the day with another juvie black. Day 4, although we didn’t get our first fish until after lunch, it was worth the wait for another spectacular sail for Mike and then a larger 50kg black marlin (on 6kg) for Chris to seal the deal right on cease fishing.
Big congratulations to all – and especially Captain Luke on winning his home port’s tournament at last!
