Grand slams (which is all three marlin species in a single day) are caught here, often!
And getting to Fraser Island is now easier than ever with flights direct into Hervey Bay daily from both Brisbane and Sydney. KEKOA’s home in Urangan marina (Hervey Bay Boat Club) is less than 10 minutes from the airport and you are on your way.
Blue marlin have been caught here every single month of the year – and in great numbers as the current of the EAC (East Australian Current) converges on the drop off on the eastern side of the island.
And for living aboard multiple day trips, Fraser Island itself offers a variety of anchorages for live aboard charters depending on the weather conditions.
Juvenile black marlin
The juvenile black marlin are found in the area right through from the cooler months (May and June), right through to the summer peaking often in December.
These fish can be caught both inside the island on the grounds off Watumba Creek and Rooney’s Point where you can be fishing quite literally metres off the beach, as well as outside (the seaward) side of the island along the Breaksea Spit.
Outside marlin fishing or in combination with, the fishing options in the region are endless. KEKOA offers extended live aboard trips to the outer reefs at the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef including Frederick, Wreck, Cato, Kenn andSaumarez Reefs as well as live aboard trips to Lady Musgrave and Lady Elliot Island. The bottom fishing at the top of Fraser Island is also great, particularly in the cooler months, while the bottom end of Fraser Island across the Wide Bay bar and off Rainbow beach offers a variety of fishing second to none!
