August – September
Light Tackle and Fly Black Marlin Fishing
Townsville Black Marlin Fishing
Given the variety of fishing at Cape Bowling Green, this is a must fish destination!
Cape Bowling Green located 30 miles east of Townsville provides a magnitude of different fishing action. The reefs and shoals come alive with huge bait schools in August and September and provide action a plenty for light tackle and fly fishing enthusiasts. Juvenile black marlin, sailfish and other pelagic species such as tuna and mackerel are ready and waiting to take the bait.
The prolific juvenile black marlin offer great challenges for light tackle specialists or a lot of fun for the gamefishing novice.
Day trips and live aboard are both available – Cape Bowling Green also provides an excellent anchorage for extended trips.
Cairns Black Marlin Fishing
In September before the giant black marlin show up, the fishing grounds off Cairns offer a variety of light tackle billfishing options for juvenile black marlin and sailfish, as well as spectacular fishing for pelagic species such as Spanish mackerel.
In the past few years the light tackle marlin fishing off Cairns has been particularly good late season (mid to late September) in close off Fitzroy Island. In 2012, KEKOA had several spectacular days fishing here with our best day being 7 black marlin by 2pm!
Day trips and live aboard are both available – for live aboard, KEKOA will anchor behind one of the many reefs or even behind Fitzroy Island itself giving our guest the option for a morning swim or snorkel on the reef before getting stuck into the marlin action!
Highly recommended for marlin novices or corporate groups.
