Gulf Barra Season Week 6: The Novices

Jason ‘Hass’ Hassett is a regular fishing with us for marlin, but this is his first fish chasing the barra. And ‘big fish Jason’ already has his sights on the inshore ‘grander’ – the 1 metre plus barramundi!  Joining Jason on this trip are Bomber (Bryan McKane) and Day-sy (Stephen Day – Daisy(?)).  Bomber has fished with us before with Jason on the GBR last year, but Day-sy is a first timer (and he’s not sure why its taken him this long to make it!)

The boys started the first day with a more modest goal of a ‘half-metrey’ but smashed it with a 78cm on the first fish!  While there were several good quality fish to follow, overall fishing was tougher on the neap tides that the hot run we had last week. Hopefully they get stuck into them today!

Update: Its been a great week of fishing and I’m happy to report the boys are hooked and there has even been a ‘near grander’ with Bomber bringing in a 97cm monster today!  We are about to head out for the last session before the end of the trip, for the high tide at 5pm and will be finishing the day how it started – in the dark – as the boys elected to rise nice and early and take advantage of the SUPER-moon today to fish the high tide at 4:30 (see the pic of the moon below). Its been a great week, the boys have got some really nice fish (more than 250 barra all up) and have been an absolute pleasure to have on board!

Absolutely AWESOME photos Kel – they just keep getting better and better. And I do not mean just the fish ones …… the shots of the birds and the moon and the jumping barra are sensational. Well done!

Hass must be a good bloke. he lets all his mates catch the big fish and he catches the bait.
