We started our heavy tackle season in 2010 with a three day trip with father and son, Adrian and Blake Salter and Roger Shepherd from Sydney. Although Adrian has fished the Sydney/Port Stephens area for marlin before, he’d never had success as an angler so he was hoping to hook up to his first marlin on this trip. And it didn’t take long before he did just that — although we threw him in at the deep end, the 850lb-er gave him a tough, almost 2 hour fight.
On day 2, 12 year old Blake was keen to have his chance of a first marlin and he did, with a nice little guy that he quickly brought to the side of the boat. Later, Adrian put the lesson he learned in his big fight the day before to use with a nice 600lb black. Day 3 dawned a little stormy and choppy although the weather glamoured out mid-morning. Both Adrian and Blake added to their tally with a fish a piece in the 200-250lb range.
