Townsville Billfish Challenge: Runner Up Champion Team

We welcomed KEKOA regular and tourney major sponsor Mike Carney back on board for the tournament this year – and accompaning Mike, a couple of familiar faces. Nigel Lucas who is part of the Toyota team with Mike and a tourney regular as well as Brian Christensen who hasn’t fished with Capt. Luke since the old Assegai days to return to fish with Mike once again.  Another familiar face back on board for the comp was Ross Martin who likewise was Luke’s regular crew back in the Assegai and first KEKOA days – who is now what we like to call a fly-in/fly-out deckie 😉  Was great to have Ross back on the team while Millsy is away exploring South Australia – and with Luke’s brother Capt. Matthew also joining us on deck for the first two days, it was great to have the whole team together again!

While the fishing wasn’t red hot by Cape Bowling Green’s standards, we kept the momentum going throughout and after sitting in third place for much of the comp, managed to snare an early fish on the final day to put us into the bridesmaid position once again!  Congrats to Mike, Nigel and Brian for being so competitive year after year.

Another big highlight of the four day event was catching up with the other teams. We had a brilliant raft up at Cape Bowling Green the first night (and Adam took this pic of us from Key West before they too joined the raft up). So brilliant it was not repeated due to the many sore heads it created on following days. The club put on a great event and party as always, let just hope that more fish come to join in again next year!
