Gulf of Carpentaria Barramundi Season 2014 – Tasmania’s Bestest

Owner Scotty Taylor and long time mates Glen and Vic joined us on the river again this week. We started the week with a quick and hot afternoon session on the drains upon arrival and then enjoyed a drink on the back deck as the sun went down and a little presentation for Scotty with a Bill Mount Trophy to celebrate his Great Marlin Race win (from Australian Creative Fish Mounts – its a beauty!)  Scotty with skip (Luke) below – barra and billfish!

This is barra trip number 5 for Scotty, Vic and Glen who previously had only ever marlin fished with Luke (must be over 12 years on the Giant Black Marlin now??) and even though they don’t get barra in Tasmania (okay Vic, you’re an honorary Tasmanian 😉 they sure love getting into the barramundi. The fishing has been red hot day after day this week and PBs have been smashed – first for Glen, then Vic and even Millsy. While Scotty scored anther great catch with a 71cm triple tail on the flats that smashed his lure and gave him a great fight (and a few aerials).  Luke has never seen such a big triple tail in his years fishing up here! tipletail With the weather surrounding Tropical Cyclone Ita a bit up in the air, we elected to stay in the Wenlock for the duration of the trip to take advantage of the sheltered anchorage from the westerly winds. Hopefully conditions will ease so we can get out for some bluewater fishing on Monday.

And I was very lucky to be able to fish with Scotty myself this week and catch a birthday barra or two..or 20 or 40! 😉

Update: many more photos added below. And a great day on the bluewater side wtih the motherload of Spanish mackerel! And a lovely night on anchor at Boyd Bay.
