2016 Cairns giant black marlin season on KEKOA

Another giant black marlin season has come to an end on the Great Barrier Reef off Cairns on board KEKOA.

As we moved away from the El Nino weather cycle that affected the Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea in 2015, water temperatures in 2016 returned to normal (if only hot from quite early in the season).  Fishing was okay though certainly not spectacular, but again we were lucky to have some great trips with our fantastic guests who have again traveled from all over Australia and overseas to join us.  In addition to our regulars, we had some familiar faces back fishing with us again after an absence including Garry and Sherrell Carter who spent a week with us light tackle record chasing, and our New Caledonian friends also returned again in 2016.  We also had some great trips with new guests joining us for the first timeand we look forward to fishing with you again in 2017 and beyond!

Something else that exceeded our expectations in 2016 was the brand new Garmin install in both the Flybridge and tower paired with the brand new Airmar transducer.

I (Kelly) have put together some photo galleries from the season gone. You can take a look at the full galleries here (and buy full resolution digital copies if you so desire!). I’ve put some of my favourite shots from the season below.

And as always, please follow our social media channels for all the regular updates and season recaps on Facebook and Instagram. Video to come as well!

We are taking a short break over the Christmas period as cyclone season descends on North Queensland. But Luke and I will be getting plenty of our own fishing in as we usually do. He has made it up to Tinaroo Dam twice already in his first week home and we’re also taking advantage of some good weather later this week to get out in our Grady White Senshi.

In the New Year we’ll be again gearing up for our Gulf barra season (fully booked) which runs through June before the marlin starts all over again.

Wish you all the very best over the holiday season and look forward to spending some time with you again in 2017!
