If you haven’t fished a Cairns heavy tackle season some may say you haven’t fished at all. Year after year the Giant Blacks return to this area of the Great Barrier Reef to spawn with females ranging from 700 to 1300lbs and an abundance of smaller males from 250lbs at their side giving anglers from all over the world an opportunity of a lifetime. The reefs that stretch 150 miles from Cairns to Lizard Island are frequented by the Giant Black Marlin in September through to December; this is where the chance of catching a 1000+ pounder becomes a reality. Dawn to dust the experience never ends, bait fishing, popper fishing, jigging, swimming and snorkelling the reefs, GT’s, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Dogtooth tuna, Coral trout all this and much more before heading out to do battle with a Giant Black.

January – July
Light and Heavy Tackle, Private Charters
KEKOA offers its clients numerous charter opportunities at Australia’s premier holiday destination, the Gold Coast. Whilst the family are off enjoying one of the many attractions on the coast there is some serious fishing to be had in the fishing grounds offshore. These grounds provide great light and heavy tackle fishing for striped and blue marlin as well as a range of pelagic species such as Wahoo, Yellow Fin Tuna and Mahi Mahi.

February – March
Light and Heavy Tackle
The idyllic town of Port Stephens lays a 2.5-hour drive north of Sydney and is recognised as one of Australia’s most picturesque and action packed fisheries. Blue, black and striped marlin are prolific in these waters and it is not uncommon to catch all three species in a day, add a couple of the pelagic species to your catch and you will have a day to remember.

August – Mid September
Light Tackle and Fly Fishing
Cape Bowling Green located 30 miles east of Townsville provides a magnitude of different fishing action. The reefs and shoals come alive with huge bait schools in August and September and provide action a plenty for light tackle and fly fishing enthusiasts. Juvenile black marlin, sailfish and other pelagic species such as tuna and mackerel are ready and waiting to take the bait.
Given the variety of fishing at the Cape, this is a must fish destination!
