Cairns Marlin Fishing Season
Mid September –> December
Heavy Tackle Giant Black Marlin Fishing
The Ultimate Fishing Destination:
The Giant Black Marlin Season off Cairns, is recognised world-wide as THE number one place to catch a 1000lb black marlin. The season runs annually from late September to early December.
If you haven’t fished a Cairns marlin fishing season, some may say you haven’t fished at all. If you are an experienced marlin fisherman (or woman!), or a complete novice, Giant Black Marlin Fishing Cairns should be the number 1 option and destination on your list of your next big game fishing adventure!
Year after year the giant black marlin return to this area of the Great Barrier Reef to spawn. The females range from 700 to 1300lbs and with the abundance of smaller males from 250lbs at their side, gives anglers from all over the world an opportunity of a lifetime.
The reefs stretch over 150 miles from Cairns to Lizard Island and are frequented by the giant black marlin from September through to December; this is when your dream of catching a 1000+ pounder can become a reality.
Dawn to dusk the experience never ends — bait fishing, popper fishing, jigging for GT’s, mahi mahi, wahoo, dogtooth tuna, coral trout and swimming and snorkeling on the reef. All this and much more before heading outside the reef to do battle with a giant black marlin.
KEKOA recommends Live Aboard fishing charters for the Cairns heavy tackle season and can comfortably cater for groups of up to four anglers. Motherships are also available upon request.
We are fishing in a very special part of the world on the Great Barrier Reef and so a typical day on the reef might be a Swim (snorkel/spearifsh) and/or fish in the morning (for bait and sport fish, throwing poppers for Gts etc) and head out to fish for the big girls before lunch – all depending on what part of the reef we are fishing on. At night time we enjoy drinks and eating, chatting and reviewing the days footage from our on board cameras.
Fishing in these beautiful locations are just a bonus – along the Great Barrier Reef to Lizard Island.

He is now one of the most respected and well-known charter boat skippers operating in Australia.
He began his marlin fishing career as a young angler fishing alongside well known Australian marlin fishing personalities such as Malcolm Florence at Townsville’s Cape Bowling Green. He alsolearned from one of the greatest fishing writers this country has ever seen, Vic McCristal.
Luke has been successful in many of the big game fishing tournaments along the coast from Lizard Island to Bermagui and some of his highlights include catching 9 giant black marlin in a single day and 9 barra over a metre in a session at Crocodile Creek.
His largest black marlin capture (although these days we are mostly tag&release fishing) was 1289lbs.
